What are the methods of wood drying? What are the advantages you don’t know about?

(Summary description)Wood drying methods are mainly divided into two categories, namely natural drying and artificial drying.According to the different heating methods of wood, it can be divided into convection drying, dielectric drying, radiation drying and contact drying. Le Si Fu fireproof decorative board believes that convection drying and dielectric drying are mainly used in wood drying production. Convection drying mainly includes atmospheric drying, conventional chamber (kiln) drying, dehumidification drying, vacuum drying (intermittent), solar drying, etc. Dielectric drying mainly includes microwave drying and high frequency drying.

Wood drying methods are mainly divided into two categories, namely natural drying and artificial drying.

According to the different heating methods of wood, it can be divided into convection drying, dielectric drying, radiation drying and contact drying. Convection drying mainly includes atmospheric drying, conventional chamber (kiln) drying, dehumidification drying, vacuum drying (intermittent), solar drying, etc. Dielectric drying mainly includes microwave drying and high frequency drying.

Natural drying is also called natural drying, while atmospheric drying is the main form of natural drying, referred to as air drying. Atmospheric drying refers to stacking wood in an open field or under a ventilated shed, and using atmospheric heat to evaporate the moisture in the wood for drying.

Since the use of wood, the first drying method used by mankind is atmospheric drying, and it has been used even now. In fact, after a tree that has just been felled forms a log, from the moment it is completely separated from the root of the tree, it is in a dried state, and it is in a naturally dry state. This is because there is more water in the trees, which evaporates into the air. If we don't intervene, its moisture will evaporate until its moisture content is basically close to or basically balanced with the moisture in the ambient air in which it is located, and it will no longer evaporate moisture into the air. At this point, the log can be processed and used in this environment. When people use the air drying method to dry wood, it is not done in the case of logs, but according to the requirements of the product, the logs are sawn into a certain size of sawn timber (board square timber), and then press The natural drying process is used to dry the wood.

The advantages of atmospheric drying are: energy saving, low investment, simple technology, convenient operation, low drying cost, and can keep the original color of the wood basically unchanged. The disadvantages are: large area, the drying conditions can not be controlled, the drying time is relatively long, the wood is prone to drying defects, because the drying is carried out in the atmosphere, the moisture content in the wood cannot be dried to the value required by people . In modern wood drying production, atmospheric drying is only used as an auxiliary method, and the conventional room drying method is currently the main drying method.

Conventional room (kiln) drying refers to the use of wood drying room (kiln) to dry wood. It can artificially control the drying conditions to dry the wood, referred to as room drying or kiln drying. At present, in the wood drying production at home and abroad, conventional room drying accounts for 85% to 90% of the wood drying production. The heat source used is a steam heater, which requires a steam boiler. The advantage of conventional room drying is that it can ensure the drying quality of wood of any tree species and thickness, and can dry the moisture content of the wood to any state required. The drying cycle is short, the equipment operation is flexible, and the drying conditions are easy to master, which is convenient for realizing wood drying production. Machinery Automation. The disadvantage is that the drying equipment is relatively complicated, the one-time investment is relatively large, the energy consumption is relatively large, and the drying cost is relatively high. According to the range of temperature control in the drying room, conventional room drying can be divided into three types: low-temperature drying at 45-60℃, normal-temperature drying at 60-100℃, and high-temperature drying at higher than 100℃. Generally, low-temperature drying and room-temperature drying are combined for hard-to-dry wood or wood that is easy to dry but thick; high-temperature drying can be used for wood that is easy to dry and small in thickness. Both atmospheric drying and conventional room drying belong to traditional wood drying methods, and they are collectively referred to as conventional drying.

In addition to the above two drying methods, there are methods such as dehumidification drying, vacuum drying, microwave drying and solar drying. They have their own advantages and disadvantages. Due to the limitation of their scope of use and conditions, they have not been widely used.
